Made good progress on the novel yesterday.

However I didn't work on it anymore today. Instead I sat down and wrote a short scifi story my husband gave me the idea for before leaving for work this morning. :)

Finally broke 20K and then promptly didn't feel like writing anymore. Man this part is hard, protagonist needs to get her butt moving.

Also, portobello mushrooms make a wonderful addition to chili.

I have a craving for French surreal cinema. I've got Delicatessen from Netflix, but I need to find some films I've never heard of.

Meh. So Maynowrimo is shot, but I find myself not caring. Today was a good writing day. And, if I stick to my own goals, I should still have the first draft finished sometime in July.

So while being behind on my daily word count is not great, I'm happy that I'm at least writing (fiction) again. The last few weeks of university was full of term papers so I hadn't worked on the novel since April 19th. It feels good to be back!

Total:

Finished Witch World by Andre Norton, very fun! I will be picking up more of the books at the library. Started The Adventures of Alyx by Joanna Russ.

I don't think I'll make it.

I'm only  at 17,731 words and I don't have any time this weekend to catch up.  I'm trying to get all my term papers done with time enough to make a mad dash for the finish.

We'll see.

"One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words 'Socialism' and 'Communism' draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, 'Nature Cure' quack, pacifist, and feminist in England." - George Orwell

Nudist?!  For shame.

I'm currently in Phil 313: Eastern Religion and its really got me thinking about what I eat and why I eat it.  So in short, I've been cutting out the meat and upping the veggies and legumes.  I'm thinking of it as a personal challenge and a kind of health/philosophy experiment.

Playing Dungeons & Dragons again, I'm an elven cleric named Tinuviel Falmari.  According to the Professor, Tinuviel means "daughter of twilight" or "nightingale" and Falmari means "sea-elf".  4th edition is so much simpler, I loves it.

Also getting back to A Song of Ice and Fire, currently on A Clash of Kings.

I found an awesome book at the library the other day (in the midst of my quest for a steaming cup of mayan drinking chocolate) called The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino.  Its set in the Middle Ages and the narrator is a traveler that has come to this inn where there he and all the other travelers staying there have mysteriously lost their voices.  The landlord brings them a deck of tarot cards and each traveler uses them to tell a story (ala the Canterbury Tales).  Pictures of the tarot cards are laid out in the margins of the book as that part of each story is told.  How odd to find a book that is such a perfect amalgam of so many of my favorite things!

Currently drinking champurrado, an awesome new drink I've discovered made with chocolate, masa, and cinnamon.

So I'm going to come back to Waking the Moon at a later date.  Instead I picked up Don Quixote de la Mancha and it is awesome!  I'm over half-way done already!  It is both hilarious and bittersweet.  Finally, a book that is holding my attention in this post-semester daze.

Speaking of that semester that is done and gone...4.0!!!  Chancellor's List, baby.  I am so proud, especially as this was the hardest semester so far, I really had to earn those grades (well, all except for one of them).

Summer semester starts on Monday.

I had to quit Perdido Street Station at page 157.  The guy writes both pompously and sloppily.  I would like to believe that a woman who has a scarab for a head can be sexy (google "khepri" for the egyptian deity on which this character is based) but Mieville's writing just ain't good enough to convince me.  Now, I have a very open mind when it comes to fantasy, but like all literature, suspension of disbelief is not possible when the author's clumsy writing pulls one out of the story.  I feel like Mieville is just wildly trying to create something "new" just to be cool and lets the writing fall to the wayside.  No, using big words does not make you a good writer, and Mieville uses obscure vocabulary unnecessarily, showing his immaturity as a writer.  What's so funny about all this is that I'm not one to turn my nose at fantasy that revels in obscure language, and perhaps this is what makes me impatient and umimpressed by Mieville's antics.  I've read Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy and Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun tetralogy, both highly literate (with Wolfe's archaic vocabulary enhancing his alien landscape in a way Mieville's language absolutely does not.)  In short, I'm highly disappointed as Perdido Street Station won both an Arthur C. Clarke Award and a British Fantasy Award and I just can't fathom why.  Mieville certainly has some creative ideas but their poor execution only goes to prove that it is good writing just as much as creativity that makes a worthwhile fantasist.

And Mieville has the gall to criticize Tolkien.  Whatever opinion one might have about Tolkien's legendarium or personal philosophy, his status as an English professor is clear, at least the man knew how to write.

So I started Waking the Moon by Elizabeth Hand last night, she's someone I've wanted to read for a long time and so far so good.

Oh! I got an "A" in Shakespeare!!!  (That makes 4 out of 5 "A"s so far!)  The only class I'm waiting for now is Chaucer...

The semester is over!  Went out for pizza and cider last night to celebrate.  I could hardly get out of bed this morning, all that stress that was propelling me has begun to dissipate, leaving me to collapse.  I'm going to try and make the most of my weeks off with cleaning and writing.

As of May 19th I'll be taking Art Appreciation, Eastern Philosophy & Religion, and American Cinema for the summer.

Okay the snow can leave now.  Seriously.

Finished the Canterbury Tales in their entirety...in Middle English!  Hooray for a serious achievement few accomplish!

Read a paper to my Shakespeare class yesterday, it went okay I guess.  Finished my last Shakespeare paper today.  Currently writing a paper on Antigone, tomorrow I have a big ol' poetry analysis to do.  Need to finish reading Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, and Troilus and Criseyde as soon as possible.  Damn collected works and their being to big to read in the tub.  Grrr...

PacRim literary conference tomorrow.  Naturally, I'm going to the session on Frankenstein.  Speaking of monsters, I've changed my mind about my next Shakespeare paper for the umpteenth time and I'm going to write something about Caliban, found some good stuff doing research this evening.

Finished The Tempest.  Need to write first draft of second Shakespeare paper and polish Chaucer book review.

Must finish Antigone, the Physician's Tale, the Pardoner's Tale, and read about forms in free verse.

My hair is short!  Yikes!  Well, just above my shoulders anyway which is short for me.  The batman costume party went well (S. looked awesome as the Joker!)  Hopefully, we'll get our hands on some pictures soon.

Pillow Book presentation tomorrow *gulp*.  Also, need to read the Prioress' Tale tonight.  I'm so freaked out about my next Shakespeare paper...I think I'm going to compare the characters Titus Andronicus and Hamlet.  Or something.  Gah.

Oh, and its Easter.
